James Van Patten is an accomplished artist and teacher who is currently a professor of eBook Review Gal Book Review of The Acrylic Painter by James Van Pattenpainting at the prestigious School of Visual Arts in NYC. His works are displayed all over the U.S. and Europe. “The Acrylic Painter” shares just a small portion of what Mr. Van Patten has learned about acrylic painting over the years. As he states in the introduction, “This book is not just about painting with acrylic paint…it is also about the process of seeing, about coming up with visual ideas, and about the decision-making that’s so important in creating art.”

The Acrylic Painter is broken down into eight comprehensive chapters:

  1. Acrylic Paints and Additives
  2. Palettes, Brushes and Other Painting Tools
  3. Surfaces for Painting
  4. Visual Experience
  5. Color
  6. Your Vision as a Painter
  7. Acrylic Painting Techniques
  8. Finishing and Presenting A Painting

I work exclusively in acrylics, so I was excited to find this book and I was by no means disappointed. Mr. Van Patten packs a ton of useful information into the pages of this gorgeous book. The paintings are stunning and the techniques are invaluable to anyone who works in acrylics or wants to try this versatile medium. There are plenty of step-by-step instructions with accompanying photos so artists can put the techniques to use straight away. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who paints in acrylics or simply appreciates lovely artwork.
