Review of Art Students League of New York by James L. Mcelhinney

Some prestigious and accomplished artists have studied at the Art Students League of New York, including two of my favorites: Jackson Pollock and Georgia O’Keefe. The school continues to be an excellent training ground for art students of all levels. This book allows anyone to have a glimpse inside the League’s classrooms from the comfort of their own home.

Art Students League of New York On Painting by James L. Mcelhinney

Art Students League of New York begins with a charming foreword by artist and former League student, James Rosenquist, who talks about receiving a scholarship in 1955 and living at the local YMCA for just 79 cents a night. The Art Students League of New York executive director, Ira Goldberg, provides the preface. From there, the book is divided into three well defined and artistically extensive sections: Lessons and Demos, Advice and Philosophies and Interviews.

There is something for everyone in this book. Portraits, still life, landscapes and architectural artwork, just to name a few, are included in beautiful detail. The artwork and artists’ stories are sure to provide plenty of inspiration and motivation. The quality of this book is wonderful. It would make an attractive coffee table book or a welcome gift for any art lover. I would highly recommend it!
