Let me share something with you that I discovered as the Founder and Career Happiness Coach of InspiredWork: normally, when we have a career or life setback such as losing a job, we establish a new goal and then immediately take action to achieve it.
This is a traditional, horizontal approach to being happier. However, this approach doesn’t always work so well. Using it, most people wind up with a new career or lifestyle that’s just as unsatisfying as the one they had before the change. In fact, even winning the lottery is unlikely to fundamentally change your sense of wellbeing after time goes by. This stands as proof that “instant gratification” is just that: happiness that’s there for an instant, but gone shortly after.
What does work, then?
In order to transform your career and life for the better, you must first raise your energy – before looking for a new job or pursuing a new goal. This is the new, vertical approach to becoming happier and transforming your career and life.
In your career (as with any aspect of your life), you must develop a vision, create a plan, and then put the effort in to get where you want to be. But, if you raise your energy first, you will be operating from an expanded state of consciousness. Thus, you’ll be more likely to see and attract a happier career and life that will correspond with what’s best for you. So, if you choose to be happy and transform your career and life, I highly recommend that you first take the time to raise your energy.
Take a look at the diagram here to see how the vertical approach works. The graph demonstrates what I’m talking about. Low energy is contracted energy. Neutral energy is “getting by” energy. And happiness energy is expanded energy.
Think of three people walking down a sidewalk. They all have energy. They all are capable of putting one foot in front of the other and navigating their way along the street. But one of them hangs his head and shuffles, moving very slowly. One of them walks more quickly but does so without enthusiasm or a sense of going somewhere—he also appears to shuffle along. The third person walks with a spring in his step, his shoulders back, and a sparkle in his eyes.
All three people manage to walk, but what a difference in how they do it! The difference is in their energy level. What if you could change from being someone who shuffles through life, dragging your feet or just getting by, and instead could become one of the movers and shakers—someone who has the energy and passion to go after what you truly want, with optimism and faith in yourself?
That’s what raising your energy is all about. I’m a big believer in the importance of raising your energy. In fact, raising your energy and being happier are the cornerstones of all of my books. My first book, Happy Habits: Energize Your Career and Life in 4 Minutes a Day, which was recognized by Inc. as one of the best 100 business books, is 100% focused on helping people shift to a more positive mindset by changing habits they do every day on autopilot to happier, and healthy ones. I’ve also included energy and inspiration as the first step to transforming your career in my latest book InspiredWork: Create Work You Love in 8 Weeks and its companion InspiredWork Workbook. This step is amazingly effective in helping to ensure that you can really achieve your career happiness once you get your new job, start out on a new career path, or build your own business.
I hope you will join me in choosing happiness and raising your energy every day for yourself and the well being of everyone. And if you are looking for a new job, want to start your own business or start any new life-changing endeavor, then I highly recommend you choose to raise your energy first. It’s definitely the most effective first step in creating your own inspired work and enjoying both your career journey and your life.
